It is not unusual for any of us to feel down in our lives. However, if these feelings persist or they become so bad that they interfere with your ability to enjoy life you may be suffering with depression.
Everyone can experience different signs and symptoms of depression. Sometimes, when we think we may be depressed, it can actually be normal lows. However, if the symptoms get worse and last longer then it may be that you could be dealing with depression.
Some symptoms of depression can be such things as
- Lack of motivation or pleasure
- Changes in appetite
- Trouble with sleeping or concentrating
- Social withdrawal
- Suicidal thoughts
The feeling of depression can occur for many different reasons and often it is more than one thing that happens, but a few things coming together at the same time and therefore the ability to cope gets much harder.
Life events, bereavement, divorce can be the cause. Experiences in our childhood such as abuse or the breakdown of family life – matters which may have not been dealt with at the time.
Also, health issues, and fear about one’s health can also bring on depression as it can feel like you are out of control of the situation and all the fears become overwhelming.
The time to get help is when the very low, out of control feelings have been going on for a while and take over almost all day every day. If the depression is interfering with your work, relationships, enjoyment of life, it is time to talk to a therapist. The sooner you seek help, the better chance for a successful outcome of turning your life around.
